Why is my TPMS light on?

posted on
Your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) helps you to avoid potentially unsafe situations by monitoring the air pressure in your tires and alerting you when one of them drops 25% or more below its recommended pressure. Tire pressure changes can be caused by a leak or sudden rise or fall in ambient air temperature.

In this blog we will offer guidance to troubleshoot your TPMS light.

If your TPMS light is triggered your vehicle’s dashboard will display one of the following messages:

If your vehicle does not indicate which tire is low, make sure you check the pressure of all 4 tires. Click here to learn how to check your tire pressure or simply visit your favorite Daniels Tire location.

Troubleshooting Your TPMS Light

Illuminates while driving - If your TPMS light comes on and stays on for over 24 hours, at least one of your tires might have low air pressure level.

Turns on and off - Fluctuating temperatures may be causing your TPMS light to turn on and off. In fact, for every 10 degree change, your tire pressure can either drop or increase by 1 psi. Once you begin driving around, your light may turn off due to the rising temperature and/or heat generated from your vehicle.

Flashes randomly - If the TPMS light flashes for over a minute every time you start your car and then remains illuminated, this means your TPMS isn’t functioning properly, and you should take it to an auto shop for an inspection. Until repaired, continue to check the air pressure of all tires with a gauge at least once a month, and add air to the tires, if needed.

Is it safe to drive with the TPMS light on?

That depends on a few factors and how long the light has been illuminated. During seasonal changes, your TPMS light will typically illuminate due to air temperature changes. Waiting a day or two after the light comes on to get your tires checked shouldn’t be a big deal. However, if your TPMS light illuminates while the weather is consistent then that should certainly be a cause for concern and you should check your tire pressure at the earliest.

Here are some disadvantages of driving on under-inflated tires:
  • Reduced gas mileage
  • Shortened tire life due to uneven tread wear
  • Decreased steering handling capability
  • Increased chance of tire blowout due to stress from under-inflation
Daniels Tire Service hopes this blog was able to help you determine the reason why your TPMS light is on. If you have any questions, we welcome you to contact us.
