4 Signs You Need New Tires

posted on
Wondering if it's time to replace your tires? The highly knowledgeable experts at Daniels Tire Service are here to provide you with some obvious signs that can help you confirm whether you are likely in need of new tires!

1) Low Tread Depth: Tread is what helps tires gain traction with the road and allows vehicles to take corners easily and cut through water and snow safely. In the state of California, your tread level can be down to 1/32 of tread in any two adjacent grooves at any location of the tire, except in the following two situations:

  • Four thirty-second (4/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on a tire on the steering axle of any motor vehicle specified in Section 34500, and two thirty-second (2/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on all other tires on the axles of these vehicles.
  • Six thirty-second (6/32) of an inch tread depth at all points in all major grooves on snow tires used in lieu of tire traction devices in posted tire traction device control areas.

Also note that newer tires come with a tread wear bar on each tire. Once the wear bars are nearly flush with the tread, then it’s time to consider replacing the tires.

2) Sidewall Cracking: The sidewall of your tire can crack and develop gouges over time. Sidewall damage is  particularly hazardous because it increases the chances of a tire blowout while you drive. New tires have sturdy, undamaged sidewalls that have a much lower chance of a blowout during operation.

3) Vehicle Shaking: Does your car shake or feel off balance when you drive on flat, paved roads? Normally vehicle shaking is a result of tires being out of balance, however, in some cases, shaking can occur due to poor alignment or due to a problem with the tires themselves.

4) Flat Tire: One of the most common reasons to get a new tire is because of a flat tire. Flat tires can often be repaired (and at Daniels Tire Service we repair them for FREE!). However, in some cases, repairing a flat tire is not safe. This is often the case when the sidewall of a tire is damaged. In such instances, it is highly recommended that you replace your damaged tire.
